Why I Like The Papa John’s Pizza Commercial
I guess its all about the car, it reminds me of a time, yeeeeeha!!!, here we go, another old guy story! Craig Stull, who was my oldest friend, had one of those Gold Camaro’s, big engine, the rear wheels would pass you in a rain storm, going around a curve. I remember back, one time in a storm, being chased by the cop, for speeding or something, flying around the corner, in front of my house, down Leslie Lane, and up the drive way at Craigs, into the garage. There were three of us, we rolled down the door, and had a good chuckle. The times were different, that cop knew us, he knew the car, he knew he would see us later. Today I think the SWAT Team would be called out. I was sad to see my old friend die, our families go back a generation, from a different town. His Father and mine grew up three doors down in Havertown. My family had moved out to the country, about 70 houses were built in this development, each on an acre of land. I was about 9, I had met a kid down the block, and was going over, my Father offered me a ride. We pull off at Craigs drive way where his Father is working on their mail box. My father looks over, almost a question, he says Bob, the man working, Craigs Father looks up, recognizes my Father from the Old Neighborhood. They hadn’t seen each other for years, both had gone off to the Marines, Bob a little older, their paths hadn’t crossed until now. Ahhh, the good old days, Carlos Santana was still dropping acid. Life was simple then, I guess old guys always think that, but it sure was nice to go into a concert, and not be frisked. There was lots of talk about the future of things, the Space Program in full swing, computers were at their infancy. The buzz was jobs would go away, as a result of these computers, what I thought they meant, was would be replaced by these machines, performing tasks once performed by workers. Over the years I stayed away from computers, I saw they took up lots of time, time I wanted for other things. It was looking like new jobs were being created, by all this computer stuff, the country was in school to learn this, all looking to work in this new frontier. Well the jobs did go away, to the same places the manufacturing jobs went, out of country, anywhere people work cheap. Forty years ago there was an enlightened generation, during that time, it is said, that if you truly had a good time, you won’t remember any of it. It is my generation driving this mess, I can’t understand the greed. We all talked about, were excited by the prospect of a kinder planet, peace and love, remember? I guess when that bumper sticker showed up saying ” he who dies with the most toys wins” people took it for the truth, its a catchy phrase, I understand how it caught on, but its not the truth! If you want some truth, find a book called ” The Sky’s The Limit”, its written by John Nichols, an american novelist, this work, non fiction. So my old friend Craig, we were different, I’ve told you some of me, to bad Craigs not around to tell you some of him. He was the person in my life, where no topic was off limits, we knew each other that well, our sleeves rolled up, everything on the table. Mostly, we were thousands of miles apart, but always stayed in touch. It was hard work, on both our parts, to keep close, over the miles, over the years. Back in South Philly, a couple years back, Craig was living just a few blocks from me, not much farther a distance, than what was between us as kids, when we got together, we were kids. I remember my Father telling me, when he was about my age,”you know your getting old, when you wake in the morning, you reach for the paper, turn right to the obituaries, checking to see who’s left
