Johnson Jon !!
The summer of “91″ I was traveling to a workshop in Taos. I got off the highway in central arizona and headed north into the indian lands. I drove through the night, arriving at Canyon De Chelly just before dawn. I recall driving to the Antelope House Overlook, walking out to the rim, listening to the sounds of the canyon as the light seeped over the edge, down the walls and onto the pastures below. I would come back to this place, well actually, come back to a place, right across the road. At about10:00AM I started rolling for Taos, about 800 miles from L. A., I got there in about 1400 miles. I took mostly dirt roads across the Reservations coming out north west of Los Alamos. There were no road signs on the reservations, I don’t think they want a lot of people driving around out there sight-seeing.
When I would see someone sitting on the side of the road, I would stop, find out where they were going, take them there, and then get pointed in the right direction. My Navajo is not so good and I didn’t run into to many people who spoke english on this part of the trip, however I understood that I was a guest, and in whatever way I could, to be helpful. I came to many crossroads, left turns, right turns each one of those turns, affecting what would happen next on my journey. It seems to me, no matter how insignificant a choice you face may seem,it has a powerful effect on how your life plays out.
