A couple things about Gettysburg that seem not to be remembered are the battles were fought on July 1st,2nd, and 3rd. The other is that the battle was fought over shoes. If the outcome had been different, I can’t help but wonder, how the Southern Solders,in victory with their shoes, walking off the battlefield, might of felt, surveying the carnage, the very cost of those shoes. The town of Gettysburg had told the Confederate Army what they had in town, and what they were able to part with. This battle had been shaping up to take place in Harrisburg. I am sure the town folk of Gettysburg were hopeful these army’s would move on, as they had crops in the ground, all the hard work of the spring season complete. I think poor choices were made, choices motivated by mistrust and greed. The mistrust on the part of the Confederate Army certainly was not without foundation, after all, they were moving through Northern Territory, unfamiliar with the land and it’s people. Had this Army listened, the voice of reason would have told them this farming community would do all that it could to see this Army continue North, bypassing their town, assembling for the battle that was to take place in Harrisburg. The South was not willing to accept what Gettysburg had offered, instead the choice was made to march on the town and claim the spoils of war!
