“american upbeat”a christian cue
I had a boss years ago,in a store on Hollywood Blvd, named Revy. It was an interesting place to work, one of those stores with the black lite and poster rooms, you know, always burning incense. I can remember, one of our best customers was King Tut, from the old batman series. We had a nice group working here, we all hung out together. In the store, there was one pin ball machine, “Amigo”. Revy liked that machine because it had a cross on it. We’d close the store at ten, count out the money, then play, sometimes all night long, Revys Christian Pin Ball Machine. This guy Revy was a gambler, a pool hustler turned christian. He was real good at shooting pool, he said he had learned from Wille Massconnie. We would go down to the old basement pool hall on Western at Hollywood blvd. I was just a hack, but this guy was amazing! He could run rack after rack, all the time talking of a map, unfolding, directing his choice of shots. He was enjoying shooting pool again. He had stopped hustling upon turning Christian. Believing it an act of deceit to Hustle someone in pool, he had just stayed away from the game. He was realy digging playing pool, but got more and more bothered by having to use different cues, he wanted his own. He would try to stash one away in some dank corner, but you know someone always found it. He had heard about this guy over in Burbank who was making pool cues, he felt he was shooting good, having fun, and deserved his own stick. We took a drive over and he bought one on the spot. Well, not on the spot, these were Custom Cues. You picked out your wood. Revy picked a beautiful block of Lemon wood and decided that on the butt, to have an inlaid mother of pearl cross. It took about 3 weeks before it was finished, and when it was Revy loved it. He was always at the pool hall, leaving us boys to be running the store. After a month or so Revy had worked out in his mind, how he could Hustle pool honestly. After all, he had The Christian Pool Cue. So he gave notice, we got a new boss, and he took off hitch hiking east, cross in hand, back to some of his old haunts. I think in about three weeks he shows back up. The first thing anybody asks is where is the cue, of course we all tell him we’re glad to see him, that we’ve been thinking of him, but where is the Christian Cue? So anyhow he mumbles out something about leaving it in the back of a pick up truck, tells us that he had just figured out this honest hustling wasn’t going to work anyhow, God had re leaved him of the burden, and he was glad to be rid of it! He came back to work with us, it had been hard, this new boss and all. Revy knew the Business and although he didn’t come back as manager,he spent time with our new manager, taking him to school, getting our orders in order
