“american upbeat” swimming
Only two times in my life have I had to swim from the police. Both times you should be glad to hear, were successful.—————— If for no other reason, the fact, that in this format, what I put up last, you will see first, we’ll talk about Annapolis. “Work with me here”. If anyone is familiar with Philadelphia on Leaf Erickson day, and what happens on the Sckukill, your gonna like this. So there’s a Father and Son, there of Viking decent, and every year on this holiday, they sail a Viking Ship down the River. The Son and I are good friends, we’ve wrestled. The shop where we were working, would go idle for a few weeks each year. My buddies Father had a Sailboat out on the Eastern Shore. He was planing to spend a week or so out on the Bay, and asked if we’d like to come along. The Bay is a place just drenched in history and legend. One evening, after leaving port, we are sailing to a place to anchor for the night. We see a very large wake breaking the surface of the water. This wasn’t some fish or turtle swimming past. I don’t imagine some big old Grand Daddy Gator could leave a wake that big. We figured it was Chessie, a cousin, To the Monster at Loch Ness. If nothing else, it sure added some tension, as we swam that night among thousands of glowing jellyfish. We never would have gone swimming, had it not been so darn hot, that night on the Bay. We were a volatile combination of ideas sailing around that bay. Nord liked listening to Rush, and I,never being the one to douse a smoldering fire with a little water, I reach for the 5 gallon can of gas. It got pretty heated at times. The Father and I were on different sides of the fence on most things. Drew stayed pretty stressed, he didn’t want a pissed off Father. We had been out for a few days. We weren’t to far from annapolis, and decided it might be good to sail into port. We would have a little time to tour the town, eat some food, and unwind some of the tension. The water taxis stop at midnight but the bars close at 3am. Ever resourceful, Drew and I chart a course, across a dock, onto a yacht, jumping off the back, to leave about a 20 yard swim to the place we’ve moored the boat. Its about 7oclock when the four of us decide to have dinner. We had walked up to the capitol, then on the bay, we watched a regatta from atop a bridge. We browsed a few shops, and were all feeling good. Coming here was doing us good! Nord has no interest in a nighttime tour of Port Dives, so after dinner leaves us, and catches the 9o-clock water taxi. Drew and I bring Garret, the fourth man on our cruise, into the loop. We worked him over pretty good. We Just about convinced him, although he couldn’t swim so good, 20 yards was a piece of cake. In some bar, its about 11:30, a half hour before the last water taxi, Were drinking, when the bar tender hears what were talking about. He reaches under the counter, pulls out a plastic bag, and tells us it is for our wallets. Well it was on! 20 yards, piece of cake. We made full use of that extra 3 1/2 hours for drinking. when we finely came out, we were hammered. We were all friendly drunks, what I had forgotten, and something I had seen before, was Drew, like many Drunk Vikings, might like to wrestle. As were walking along the water front, to the spot that we had sussed out earlier, I’m grabbed and put in a head lock. We twist around a little, then throw each other in the Bay. We are about 200 yards from the boat as we splash. A cop down the way sees we’re up to something. Now here’s that choice thing again. We make the right one for the moment, we stuff the wallets in the bag and start swimming. Garret was having a little trouble, this wasn’t his jungle. One thing that helped him along, were the thousands of jelly fish. It seemed, that if you kept moving in the water, they were not able to sting. Well Nord heard us, we were making quite a racket in the water. He could also hear the police, as they were on the water searching. As we got to the sailboat, Nord pulled us in, striped us down, and got us quietly and quickly into our bunks. From our bunks we could hear the cops out looking for about 40-50 minutes. When it finely got quiet, I began to roar with laughter. Needless to say, the next day,we were a little crispy. It took some time, to get it all together, and sail out of port. The crew wasn’t hitting on all eight. That was the last port we saw on that trip. Nord was ascared to take us anywhere. That day we sailed way up a River, to a place with no people. We swam around a little, cooked some food, and just tried to get over our antics of the night before. I really believe, Nord, deep down, was proud of the” Viking Spirit” of his crew

Ed: Your Annapolis story delighted me. As you know, Dan and I have a sailboat on the bay and have spent many a night in the restaurants and bars near the harbor. One night we rented a slip close to town. We had some great neighbors and shared single-malt Scotch. The evening culminated with my diving demonstration from atop the treated poles to which we tied our lines – very difficult to climb to the top. The folks at the ourdoor bar across “Ego Alley” gave much applause for somersaults and jack-knives. I can’t believe I swam in such dirty water… but had a ball. I love your writing. It’s fresh, uncomplicated and reveals a lot about you.
